Preparation

Preparation of the existing substrate is one of the most important elements of any flooring install. Floor preparation is a critical step to ensuring the durability, adhesion, and performance of the subsequent resin flooring system being applied (such as epoxy, polyurethane, polyaspartic etc)

Preparation

Methods

The most Common methods of floor preparation include:

  • Diamond grinding

Using diamond-tipped grinding machines to smooth and level the surface, remove coatings, adhesives, or contaminants.

  • Shot blasting

Propels steel shot at the surface to remove weak laitance, coatings and contamination while creating a textured profile for new systems.

  • Scabbling / Von Arx

Impact cutters/heads chip away surface layers to remove thick coatings or rough, weak concrete and achieve adhesion.

  • Sanding

Light abrading to key existing coatings, remove minor imperfections or intercoat contamination.

  • Planing

Removes higher spots and reduces levels using rotating drum cutters; used for thicker removal than grinding.

Preparation

Why do floors need preparation?

  • Surface preparation

The correct type of floor preparation depends on the type of substrate being prepared and the type of flooring system being installed.

  • Strength checks

Strength checks can also be completed to ensure the existing substrate is of adequate strength, ready to accept a resin flooring finish.

  • Moisture checks

Checking for moisture in your subfloor is crucial before installing your resin flooring system. Excess moisture can lead to floor failures in the future.
